Case Study: Custom Four-Compartment Water Tank Planter Box System

Custom water tank planter box

Project Overview
Viking Plastics collaborated with a client to design and build a custom four-compartment water tank planter box system. As a result, the unit—tailored to meet specific functional and structural needs—effectively combines water storage, sustainable irrigation, and integrated planting in a single modular solution.

Design Features
Developed with Viking Plastics’ design input, the system includes:

  • Lower Water Tank (Storage):
This section collects and stores rainwater from the roof’s stormwater system. Subsequently, the stored water is used to irrigate nearby external garden beds, thereby reducing reliance on mains water.
  • Upper Water Tank (Inlet):
Acts as the collection point for roof runoff and allows for gravity-fed distribution to the lower tank and planter systems.
  • Large Planter Area:
Designed for deep-rooted vegetation and features a self-wicking irrigation system fed by the stored rainwater.
  • Small Planter Area:
Suited for herbs or shallow-rooted plants, also incorporating a wicking bed system to promote water efficiency.

Sustainability & Structural Integration
The system enables passive irrigation of external garden beds, reducing reliance on mains water. Additionally, the unit plays a structural role by supporting window frames in the residential dwelling, making it both functional and architectural.

Material & Construction
The planter box was fabricated using Paneltim® plastic construction panels, known for their lightweight yet strong design. These panels resist chemicals, last long, and are easy to fabricate. They are ideal for modular systems exposed to water and weather.

Outcome
Overall, this custom solution seamlessly blends sustainable water management, urban greening, and structural utility. Moreover, it is delivered with precision and innovation by Viking Plastics.
