A cooling and straining tank is used to hold and retain warm or hot waste water.  This is so the water can cool to a legally acceptable temperature before being discharged out to the sewer system. This prevents the growth of algae in the sewer system.  The first tank chamber includes a removable straining basket to trap lint, hair and other fibrous matter before the waste water enters the second cooling chamber.

What size tank will my business need?

The appropriate size, or capacity, tank will be nominated by your local water authority under your trade waste agreement. The maximum allowable temperature of the waste water discharged to sewer is also set by your local water authority. Often this is around 38°C. You will need to contact your local water authority so they can determine the capacity and exact temperature applicable to your application.  To find your local water authority, click here.

Capacity: 250 litres – 2000 litres

  • Larger capacity tanks are available by special order
  • Where there are space limitations, an equivalent capacity cooling and straining tank can be custom made to fit the available space

Construction Options

Thin Skin Tanks

  • A below ground cooling and straining tank is fabricated from 6mm polyethylene.  These tanks must be surrounded with 100mm thick (minimum) concrete walls and base.
  • Full height keying strips are provided to ensure the plastic tank walls bind to the poured concrete. The keying strips include holes to install Y12 reinforcing bars.  The reinforcing bars help to provide better binding of the steel reinforcement in the poured concrete
  • External 50mm flat rim flange around the top of the tank provides a better binding surface between the tank and poured concrete and a level contact area for the access cover/s to seat

Paneltim® Tanks

  • A Paneltim® cooling and straining tank is a cost competitive alternative to thin skin tanks. Due to the  superior strength and rigidity of Paneltim®,  poured concrete reinforcement is not required thus saving time and money.
  • Paneltim® is an innovative 50mm thick, dual skinned sandwich panel.  It has an internal cross-rib cell structure that is light weight yet offers superior strength and rigidity in both length and width.
  • A Paneltim® below ground cooling and straining tank can be backfilled with crushed rock or stabilised sand
