Today, Year 10 students from Keysborough College were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at how sustainable manufacturing meets innovation during their visit to Viking Plastics Engineering in Braeside. The visit, organised by the Bayside Glen Eira Kingston Local Learning and Employment Network (BGKLLEN), aimed to inspire young people with real-world examples of environmentally conscious careers in manufacturing.
The day began with a warm welcome from Viking Plastics’ General Manager, Bruce Scott, who gave the students an engaging overview of the company’s work and mission. He explained how Viking’s products — including trade waste tanks, raingardens, and planter box liners — are designed with the environment in mind.
“Our sustainable manufacturing is about improving the environment,” Mr Scott said. “From preventing harmful waste from entering our waterways, to supporting water-sensitive urban design through our raingardens and planter box liners — we’re proud to be making a difference.”
The students learned that Viking’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its products. The factory runs on solar power generated from rooftop panels, and all plastic offcuts from the manufacturing process are recycled, reinforcing the company’s goal of minimising environmental impact.
A highlight of the visit was the guided factory tour, where students saw the fabrication process in action and even tried their hand at plastic welding. It was a valuable hands-on experience that showed them how Viking’s products are made and the skills involved in the process.
The visit was part of BGKLLEN’s broader effort to ensure that young people gain meaningful exposure to industry and career pathways. “It’s all about giving students the confidence and insight they need to thrive in life after school,” said Liz De Nittis, Business Engagement representative for BGKLLEN.
For the students, the day was both educational and inspiring — a chance to see how a local manufacturer is helping shape a cleaner, more sustainable future.
