Viking Plastics was recently commissioned to fabricate two aquaculture degassers for Melbourne Aquarium.
What is a Degasser?
Degassers are essential for aquarium systems, particularly in protein skimmers. These skimmers inject air and ozone under pressure, increasing levels of oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, and residual carbon dioxide (CO2) due to animal respiration. The main role of a degasser is to remove these excess gases, improving water quality and maintaining a healthy environment for marine life.
How Does a Degasser Work?
Water enters the degasser from the top, flowing onto a distribution tray that evenly spreads it. Inside, special blocks agitate the water, creating turbulence. This splashing increases the surface area, allowing more effective off-gassing. Gases under higher pressure, like oxygen and CO2, are expelled from the water. Once treated, the water exits from the bottom and returns to the aquarium, now free from excess gases.
To enhance the process, a low-pressure air blower is often added. This blower introduces ambient air into the degasser, promoting more contact with fresh air and boosting the efficiency of gas removal. It’s easy to add in the future by directing air into the central top vent, offering a flexible and scalable solution for aquarium water management.
Degassers optimise the removal of excess gases, helping maintain a balanced aquatic environment. This is crucial for the health and well-being of aquatic animals.
Fabrication
Paneltim Plastic Construction Panel
The Melbourne Aquarium degassers were fabricated using Paneltim® plastic construction panels. Paneltim® panels are highly durable and resistant to wear, making them ideal for use in the harsh conditions of aquaculture systems. They can withstand the pressures of water, UV exposure, and varying temperatures, ensuring a long lifespan with minimal maintenance. This makes them a reliable option for building aquaculture tanks, filtration systems, and other essential structures. Their smooth, non-porous surface makes them easy to clean and resistant to the buildup of algae and bacteria. This helps maintain the health of aquatic animals and reduces the risk of contamination. The degassers are 4850mm long x 1060mm wide x 1365mm high.
